RIP Frank Worthington (1948-2021)

Former Leeds United striker passes away

Leeds United have been saddened to learn of the passing of former striker Frank Worthington at the age of 72.

Born in Halifax, Worthington joined the Whites from Birmingham in 1982, before making 35 appearances and scoring 15 goals for the club.

Having started his career at Huddersfield where he'd make 171 appearances, the forward moved to Leicester City where he'd play an additional 210 games.

His form with the Foxes saw Worthington win 8 caps for England, two of which came under former Leeds United manager Don Revie.

Spells with Bolton and Birmingham followed, before Allan Clarke persuaded the latter to part with him, in a swap-deal for United defender Byron Stevenson.

Clarke’s team were deep in relegation trouble, and in great need of an inspirational saviour.  The eternal showman Worthington was very nearly the answer, full of experienced trickery and know-how, a joy to watch. Had he arrived sooner, he may have prevented the club's drop to the Second Division.

Spells with the likes of Sunderland, Southampton, Brighton followed, before he was named player-manager of Tranmere Rovers.

Our thoughts are with Frank's family and friends at this time.
