Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich spoke to the media following Friday’s Premier League match with West Ham United.

The Poland international gave the Whites the lead inside six minutes from the penalty spot, but the Hammers fought back to secure three points at Elland Road.

Klich gave his assessment of the match and insists the side need to improve going forwards.

“We wanted to win the game,” said Klich.

“We conceded from set-pieces again which is a problem at the moment and we didn’t create enough chances to win the game.

“We’re losing goals from set-pieces in nearly every game and we need to do better, it’s as simple as that.

“Obviously West Ham are very strong in the air and they score in nearly every game from set-pieces and we knew they were going to be dangerous, so we needed to avoid corners and stupid free-kicks and sometimes it can difficult to defend if it is a perfect ball and perfect timing.

“We have to score more goals and we didn’t, there are not much positives from the game because we were winning and we should have kept pressing and created more good chances.

“Statistics won’t get us points, it is our goal to stay in the league and games like today and on Wednesday we had to win, so we are very disappointed.

“We had a great start and people got carried away a little bit, but we have to get safe and still this is our goal, we are going to do everything to achieve it.”

Klich also spoke about the early penalty situation, after initially being denied by a Lukasz Fabianski save, following a VAR review the spot kick was retaken, with the Poland international having the confidence to step up again and convert.

He said: “Obviously I missed the first one and you don’t want to miss penalties.

“I had the chance with another one and I knew I had to take it again and I had to score.”
