Everton: Five memorable matches

Everton: Five memorable matches

We look back at five memorable matches.

Ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash between Leeds and Arsenal, we look back at five memorable matches between the two sides...

Saturday 18th August, 1956- Leeds United 5-1 Everton

Raich Carter saw his Leeds United side begin the 1956/57 First Division season in style, with a 5-1 victory over the Toffees at Elland Road. Jack Overfield opened the scoring after just two and a half minutes, which was the first goal scored in the division for that season. Predictably, the legendary John Charles was never far from the scoresheet and he added his first of the season just nine minutes later - a campaign where he would go on to score 38 goals in 40 matches! Charles wasn’t to be the star of the show in this match though, that was to be Harold Brook who netted a sublime 21-minute hat-trick. An excellent start to the season for the Whites.

Saturday 19th December, 1970- Everton 0-1 Leeds United

Don Revie took his title chargers to Goodison Park at Christmas time, looking to continue the festive cheer around West Yorkshire as the Whites were looking to overcome Arsenal and win the First Division crown. Everton were the current title holders, having finished nine points clear of second placed Leeds the previous year. Jack Charlton opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the game, firing home after a clever assist from Mick Jones. The match was then quite scrappy, an affair which saw over 40 fouls between the two sides and gave referee, Mr D. Turner a busy afternoon. It was another excellent win for United, but they were to miss out on becoming champions by a single point, to Arsenal.

Saturday 25th August, 1990- Everton 2-3 Leeds United

After winning promotion as 1989/90 Second Division Champions, Howard Wilkinson’s Whites were on looking to re-establish themselves back in the top flight of English football. The season kicked off with a trip to Goodison Park and optimism was high in the Leeds camp and after racing into a 3-0 lead before the hour-mark had struck, the Whites had every right to be optimistic. The opener came on just eight minutes when Chris Fairclough turned the ball home from David Batty’s long throw. Gary Speed then doubled the lead before half time, with Imre Varadi making it three. Pat Nevin and John Ebbrell looked to get the Blues back into the match, reducing the deficit to 3-2 but it wasn’t enough as the opening day points went back to Elland Road.

Wednesday 19th December, 2001- Leeds United 3-2 Everton

An excellent performance under the lights of Elland Road 19 years ago, from David O’Leary’s side. Robbie Fowler netted his first goals in a Whites shirt to continue the climb up the Premier League table. Mark Viduka opened the scoring with a header just 18 minutes into the match, making no mistake from Gary Kelly’s cross. Fowler then made the crowd even more jubilant with his first for the club by smashing home a right-footed effort and was mobbed by his teammates in the celebrations. He followed that up with a typical poachers effort with 20 minutes of the second half remaining to make it 3-0 and put the points beyond doubt. Everton did spark a late comeback with two goals in the final five minutes. Joe-Max Moore and David Weir netted, but Leeds held on and ran out deserved winners. Robbie Fowler

25th September, 2012- Leeds United 2-1 Everton

The last meeting between the two teams was over eight years ago. A third round ‘Capital One Cup’ tie - as it was named then - at Elland Road. Just four minutes into the match, full-back Aidy White went on a stunning solo run, showing close control to dribble past Marouane Fellaini amongst others, before curling a left-footed effort into the top corner. An attacking match that had chances at both ends throughout, allowed Leeds to double their lead with 20 minutes remaining. A quickly taken free-kick and subsequent shot into the box was turned home by an alert Rudolph Austin at close range. Sylvan Distin’s late header gave the visitors hope of a comeback, but the Whites held on to confirm victory and keep up their 100 per cent winning record against the Toffees in League Cup ties. Leeds
