MARCELO BIELSA: WE COULD HAVE ENDED THE FIRST HALF CONCEDING

Head coach on Rotherham win.

Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa spoke to the media following Saturday’s Yorkshire derby victory over Rotherham United.

The result made history as Bielsa became the first person in charge of Leeds United to win their opening four games.

Second half goals from Luke Ayling and Kemar Roofe secured Leeds all three points, but Bielsa believes Rotherham could have easily had the lead at half time.

“The problems we had during the first half were more linked to our own goal,” said Bielsa.

“The first half would have been better if Rotherham didn’t have the offensive action that they had.

“We built too much from the back, it was not easy for us to go from a defensive position to an offensive one.

“We had less offensive actions on the left side and our crosses were not good, but in spite of all this, we were faithful to our style.

“Unlike the two first games, today looked more like a Championship game.

“We could have ended the first half conceding goals, Rotherham had three clear moments where they could have scored a goal and these actions were provoked by the mistakes we made.

“Rotherham’s offensive transitions were faster than it took us to defend and they won a lot of disputed balls.

“This indicates that the style can have some difficulties to impose itself and we have to respect other styles, because Rotherham could have ended with a positive result for them and a negative one for us.

“In the second half, the game was looking like the first half, but Rotherham didn’t have any offensive action.

“Our opponent was a little bit more tired and this gave us more spaces to attack.

“When you respect the style, sometimes you can have positive consequences and sometimes negative ones, but overall I think we deserved to win the game.”
