Leeds United Women progressed to the next round of the FA Cup with a comprehensive victory over Redcar Town Ladies.

Laura Bartup was just inches away from getting on the end of Olivia Smart’s cross inside seven minutes as the Whites looked for an early goal.

Bartup again went close 10 minutes later with her deflected strike from the edge of the box hitting the post.

Redcar’s first chance came through Jessica Round who struck from range, but was unable to find the target.

Hannah Freibach was next to go close for Leeds, she was found in the Redcar box by Bartup and her strike was denied by Sally-Anne Thompson in the Redcar goal.

Leeds made the vital breakthrough in the 33rd minute from a corner with Freibach on hand to smash home from close range.

After Thompson had denied Freibach from the edge of the box, Leeds doubled the lead.  Sandra Soares-Martins crossed from the left and Kathryn Smith met it with a superb volley which found the top corner.

Leeds were now firmly in control and Bartup almost added a third, heading just over from a corner.

The Whites did extend the lead before the break though, with Bartup weaving her way through the Redcar defence, before slotting home.

Smith had two more opportunities ahead of the interval, firing narrowly wide from the edge of the box and then being denied by Thompson with a strike from range.

In a rare chance for the home side, seven minutes into the second half, Jenni Duffy-Smith struck from distance, but was unable to keep her strike down.

Leeds managed the second period well and Bartup again threatened, driving forwards, before firing inches wide from 30 yards.

The Whites then added a fourth when the impressive Smith got to the byline, before teeing up Abbie Brown to slot home from close range.

Redcar’s best chance came 12 minutes from time, when Duffy-Smith played Round in on goal, but Leeds stopped Lauren Joyce made a fantastic stop to deny her.

Sarah Bartlett was shown a red card late for the hosts, but the Whites saw out the lengthy stoppage time without problem, following an injury to Rebecca Hunt, leading to both sides finishing a woman down.

The impressive result in the North East means Dan O’Hearne’s side progress to the Fourth Round.
