Midfielder leaves after 18-month stay...

Peter Sweeney in pre-season action against Bray Wanderers

Midfielder Peter Sweeney has parted company with Leeds United.

The former Millwall and Stoke man has had his contract terminated by mutual consent and is now free to join another club.

Sweeney made just nine appearances after joining the club in January 2008 - the last of which came against Gillingham at Elland Road in May 2008.

The 24-year-old failed to make a single appearance last season, although he did join Grimsby Town on loan during the final months of the season when he helped the Mariners preserve their Football Leagure status.

United manager Simon Grayson said: "Sweens is at the stage of his career where he needs to play regular football and I can't guarantee him that here.

"He goes with our best wishes."

Grimsby Town have publicly expressed their interest in signing the Glasgow-born player on a permanent basis.
