Preview: Leeds United vs Barnsley

Carabao Cup campaign gets underway.

Leeds United begin their Carabao Cup campaign at the Round Two stage on Wednesday evening, at home in a Yorkshire derby against Sky Bet League One side Barnsley FC (7:45pm).

A sold-out capacity crowd is expected at Elland Road with both teams taking the opportunity to come and see their respective sides in cup action, as they aim to make history with a cup run.

In the last five years, Leeds have only progressed beyond Round Two twice. The 2021/22 campaign was one of those occasions when a home win over Crewe Alexandra was followed up with a penalty shoot-out victory away at Fulham. However, a 2-0 loss to Arsenal in Round Four ended the journey.

The Reds set up the clash at Elland Road, after Josh Benson scored a last-minute winner away at Middlesbrough in Round One. With the tie level at 0-0, Benson broke forward from his central-midfield position and was on hand to slot home and seal the progression. He has scored three times in all competitions so far in the 2022/23 season.

Wednesday’s visitors have a very similar record to the Whites in the Carabao Cup over recent times. Just twice over the last five years have they progressed further than Round One. Their first match of the competition last season ended in a penalty shoot-out loss to then lower-division opponents, Bolton Wanderers.

The two teams haven’t met one another since a Sky Bet Championship clash in July, 2020. The Whites won 1-0 that day courtesy of an own-goal from Michael Sollbauer. That extended Leeds’ winning run against the Tykes to four matches, conceding just once in that time.

What has Jesse Marsch said, ahead of the match?

“We plan to make a few changes to the team and it is important for some of the players who haven’t featured as much in the first three league games to get minutes and equally for those who need rest to get it. However, our number one aim remains to progress to the next round of the competition as we’d like to put a good cup run together this season. We know it is a Yorkshire derby and Barnsley will come here looking to try and cause an upset, so we need to be at our best.”
