MATCH PREVIEW: LUFC V SWFC

MATCH PREVIEW: LUFC V SWFC

We look ahead to Saturday's clash.

Few would have predicted Sheffield Wednesday's current league position in the Sky Bet Championship at the start of the season.  The Owls, who reached the Play-Offs in both 2016 and 2017, have been hit with an injury crisis throughout the current campaign, missing a number of star players for long periods.  Carlos Carvalhal left on Christmas Eve and has since been replaced by Dutch manager Jos Luhukay.  Like Leeds, the Owls have struggled in the Championship so far in 2018, with just one victory.  Both teams will be looking to rectify that as the duo battle for three points in Saturday's Yorkshire derby at Elland Road.

Chris Wood’s goal and a penalty save from goalkeeper Rob Green gave Leeds a crucial 1-0 Yorkshire derby victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road.  Jordan Rhodes went close in the 23rd minute when he fired a shot over the bar on the turn in the Leeds box.  United took the lead though a minute later, Gaetano Berardi put a brilliant cross into the area and Wood was given the time to take a touch before picking his spot.  Wednesday won a penalty in the second half when Souleymane Doukara fouled Sam Hutchinson at a corner, however Rhodes couldn’t get the better of Green, before Berardi cleared.  Wood saw a second goal ruled out for offside, but Leeds held on for the win, moving up to fourth spot.

Team news

Leeds have no fresh injury concerns, captain Liam Cooper is unlikely to recover in time for Saturday, after missing last week's trip to Reading.  Luke Ayling, Andy Lonergan, Tyler Roberts, Kemar Roofe and Conor Shaughnessy all remain sidelined.  Barry Bannan and Sam Hutchinson both missed last week's draw against Bolton Wanderers and face late fitness tests.  Joost van Aken, Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper, Kieran Lee, Marco Matias and Keiren Westwood are all still all likely to be missing for the Owls.

The key battle

Samuel Saiz v Adam Reach

Winger Reach joined the Sheffield Wednesday back in 2016 from Middlesbrough and is the only player to feature in every Championship fixture for the Owls this season.  His performances have caught the eye this campaign and it promises to be interesting battle in Saturday's Yorkshire derby between him and Leeds playmaker Saiz.
