JASON BLUNT: WE DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH IN THE FINAL THIRD

Under-23s coach on friendly defeat.

Leeds United Under-23s head coach Jason Blunt spoke exclusively to LUTV following Tuesday’s friendly defeat against Burnley.

Tommy Wood’s early strike gave the Clarets a 1-0 victory over the Whites at Thorp Arch.

Despite not getting the result, Blunt was pleased to welcome back a number of players to his side, who got some much needed game time.

“I thought we started slowly, our passing and movement was a bit slow in the first 20 minutes, but we grew into the game,” said Blunt.

“We played out from the back, we had lots of possession, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough in the final third to break Burnley down.

“We wanted to play this game to have a good run into the Birmingham City game next week, which is important.

“Some of the players have got some game time under their belts, Mallik Wilks has spent a lot of time with the first team, so he needed a game.

“We had a few who were a bit rusty, coming back from injury, Michael Taylor and Billy Whitehouse returned, so it was important they got some minutes on the pitch.

Clarke Oduor became the latest product of the Leeds United Academy to sign professional terms with the club this week.

Oduor has featured predominately in Blunt’s side this season and he spoke about the midfielder signing his contract.

Blunt said: “It is a proud moment for all of the Academy, everybody has played their part along the way.

“It is not about any individuals, it starts from the scouts who bring them in and the Academy will continue to produce players now and in the future.

“We are delighted, but things can quickly change if players don’t knuckle down and work extremely hard.

“There are a lot of players who fall out of the game quite easily, so it is important to apply themselves in the correct manner and continue progressing.”
