FA YOUTH CUP: TIGERS FIGHTBACK STUNS UNITED

Leeds let two goal advantage slip.

FA Youth Cup Third Round

Hull City 3 (McKenzie 88, 114, Ritson 90) Leeds United 2 (Wilks 9, 27)

Hull City fought back from 2-0 down, to record a 3-2 victory over Leeds United to knock the Whites out of the FA Youth Cup in the third round.

United had a great chance to take the lead inside six minutes, Alex Wollerton sent Moses Abioye into the box and he teed up Lewis Knight who could only fire wide.

Leeds did go in front just three minutes later though, Callum Nicell delivered a free-kick and powerful striker Mallik Wilks slotted home at the back post.

United then came close to doubling the lead, Knight was denied by a fantastic save from Hull stopper Jonny Saltmer and Clark Oduor saw his shot from the rebound blocked.  The ball then went right across the face of goal, but Nicell couldn’t get on the end of it as somehow the ball stayed out.

Mark Jackson’s side went further in front in the 27th minute.  Matt Downing did superbly on the right flank to keep the ball in play with his chest, before teeing up Wilks to strike and he found the bottom left corner with a fine low strike.

Hull almost hit straight back in their first real opportunity of the match, Ahmed Salam took the ball around Leeds goalkeeper Theo Richardson, but Liam Kitching provided a goal-line clearance to prevent the striker from scoring.

Knight then had a great chance to put Leeds three up, Jake Croft delivered a floated cross and Knight who had a free header could only head over from eight yards out.

The Tigers rattled the crossbar before the break, Ben Chadwick hit a half volley from just inside the United penalty area and was just inches from getting Hull back into the game.

Half Time: Hull City 0-2 Leeds United

After the break Hull came straight out of the blocks, they had a fine chance to score two minutes into the second half, Salam found space at the back post, but he couldn’t get the better of Richardson who made a great save.

Richardson was then forced into action once again when Elliot Holmes fired from close range, but once again the United stopper produced a fine save to keep Leeds two goals up.

Wilks looking for a hat-trick nearly found it in the 64th minute, he charged into the area from the left wing, before firing at goal from a narrow angle and was only denied by the Hull stopper Saltmer.

Clark Odour had a great chance to put Leeds further in front four minutes later, he went through on goal, but was unable to get the better of the Hull goalkeeper.

With 11 minutes remaining Alex Wollerton nearly wrapped up the game for Leeds, his deflected effort went just over the crossbar.

However there was drama in the 88th minute when Hull were awarded a penalty.  Salam went down under a shove from Wilks and Robbie McKenzie sent Richardson the wrong way, slotting the ball into the left corner with the spot-kick.

Then two minutes later Hull levelled the tie.  After winning a free-kick deep into the Leeds half the hosts piled the box and Lewis Ritson scrambled the ball into the back of the net.

Hull then had a chance to win it, Richardson’s defensive clearance landed at the feet of Salam who shot at goal from range with the United keeper off his line, however the forward couldn’t find the target.

Leeds got the third period off to a bright start, Wilks found space in the Hull penalty area before firing low and was only denied by seeing the best of Saltmer in the Tigers goal.

The Leeds striker still in search of his third goal thought he had it in the 94th minute, from a corner Wilks headed into the ground and on target, before Hull cleared off the line, the referee took a long look at the linesman, but no goal was given.

A minute later Wilks had another opportunity, he broke through and opted to shoot despite having support and Saltmer again made the save.

United were made to pay for the missed chances, when McKenzie headed home a well worked cross, to double his tally for the evening and put Hull in front for the first time.

Extra Time Half Time: Hull City 3-2 Leeds United

In the final minute Henry Rollinson smashed a 30 yard half volley and saw his effort just go inches wide in what would have been a spectacular goal.

Then in the fourth minute of added time at a free-kick, the ball fell to Bobby Kamwa, who was denied by an unbelievable save by Salter, ensuring the home side went through to the fourth round.
