MARCHING ON TO ROTHERHAM

United fans to embark on charity walk to Friday night's game...

A group of United fans are set to raise funds for charity on Friday night by walking the 30-mile journey from Elland Road to the game at Rotherham.

Organised by The Square Ball fanzine, the walk to the New York Stadium will see proceeds shared between the Leeds Children’s Hospital and the Luey Jacob Sharp Foundation – the charity set up by United striker Billy Sharp and his partner following the tragic death of their son in 2011.

Supporters will be departing Elland Road at 7.30am on Friday morning and plan to arrive in time for kick-off at the televised Yorkshire derby.

The Square Ball's Michael Normanton explained: "We've been supporting Leeds Children's Hospital for a few years and the original plan was for couple of us to take part in one of their Yorkshire three peaks challenges.

"Unfortunately it clashed with a Leeds home game so rather than wait for their next event and risk the same thing happening we decided to arrange our own and centre it around Leeds United.

"We weighed up a few shorter walks before deciding that 30 miles to Rotherham seemed a challenge worthy of sponsorship!

"Around the time we were formulating the idea, we signed Billy Sharp. So it seemed only right that we split the money with the charity he and his wife established for his son Luey who died in 2011 from a rare condition known as gastroschisis."

Fans are still being encouraged to take part and more information on how to get involved can be found on The Square Ball’s website.
