Legends: Gunners Deserve Record

United legends Peter Lorimer and Norman Hunter both agree that Arsenal would be the new worthy holders of a record they helped set for Leeds 30 years ago.

The pair were part of the great Don Revie side that went 29 games unbeaten since the start on the 1973-74 season, a record Liverpool matched in 1987-88, and three decades later their achievement looks like being overtaken by an "unstoppable" Gunners team.

Arsene Wenger's team needs will equal the record if they don't lose to Bolton tomorrow, and could smash it if they beat Manchester United at Highbury at the end of the month.

Hotshot Lorimer remembers when he helped set the record fondly, having start the season with seven straight wins, but admits that if Arsenal do break the record they will have deserved it.

"Every now and then exceptional sides come along, and there's no question Arsenal are in that category," Lorimer told the Mirror

"They're head and shoulders above the rest. When you get on a run like that, as we did, the confidence grows every week. The danger is it gets too much and I think the only way they'll lose a game now is through over-confidence.

"Every manager is looking for the final pieces of the jigsaw, and then it all comes together and you've got the complete thing.

"I can see that change in Arsenal this season. They have a lot more belief than before. That comes from winning.

"When we set the record we thought it would never be beaten. But I get the feeling nothing can stop Arsenal now. It's been a challenge they've used to keep things going."

Norman Hunter agreed:

"If anyone is going to break our record, it is going to be this Arsenal team. They are so well balanced.  When we were on our run you got the feeling you could not do anything wrong. Even if you went behind in a game you didn't worry, because you knew you were going to score.

"We had Mick Jones and Allan Clarke up front scoring freely.  But we had goals coming from all over the team, with Peter Lorimer and Billy Bremner getting their share.  That was the key for us.

Arsenal now have Thierry Henry, and he is simply the best there is right now.  As long as the keep him and Patrick Vieira fit I cannot see anything stopping them.

"They will win this league by a mile."

The Leeds team of 1973-74 finally saw their unbeaten run come to an end when they lost 3-2 at Stoke, but despite a few more hic-cups along the way, including three defeats in a row, they claimed the First Division title.
