Leeds United show support for Restart a Heart Day

Club join forces with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Leeds United has teamed up with Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) to promote the importance of CPR and especially education around the emergency procedure.

Restart a Heart Day will take place on Saturday 16th October, and it is an annual training event relating to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillator use or the use of first aid surrounding heart attacks. The key aim for the event is education and training for the general public in CPR and in what to do in the event of a heart attack.

To help raise awareness around the ‘Restart a Heart’ campaign being delivered by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, which aims to give everyone the knowledge to perform CPR, supporters will be given the opportunity to learn the life-saving skill ahead of our next home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers (Saturday 23rd October). Volunteers from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service will be in attendance outside the East Stand to chat with fans, answer questions and offer advice.

Our supporters can also look out for the ‘CPR Anywhere’ video that will be shown on the big screen ahead of kick-off.

Jason Carlyon, Community Engagement Manager with YAS, said: “The quick reaction of witnesses undoubtedly saved Christian Erikson’s life in the recent Euros, as was the case with Fabrice Muamba, Glen Hoddle and David Ginola who are also cardiac arrest survivors.

“But not everyone is as fortunate. In the UK, only 10% of people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside hospital survive, partly because they don’t receive early CPR and defibrillation.

“With only one in three people in England saying they would be willing to perform CPR if they witnessed a cardiac arrest, it’s important that we give people the confidence and skills to save someone’s life in this medical emergency.

“More patients will survive if more people know what to do before an ambulance arrives, so we are delighted that Leeds United is supporting our campaign and helping us to create more life-savers.”

Leeds United captain Liam Cooper added: "The club is proud to support the Restart a Heart campaign and we hope that by getting involved, we can encourage more people to learn CPR.

“Most out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home, so by learning more about the procedure we are gaining the skills which could save the life of a friend or family member."

Over the last few weeks, ambulance staff and volunteers have visited over 100 Yorkshire secondary schools, including those working with the Leeds United Foundation, to teach CPR to 30,000 students ahead of Restart a Heart Day.
