Scott Gardner: I thought they were outstanding

U21s boss’ verdict following the 3-2 win.

Leeds United Under-21s booked their place in the Premier League Cup quarter finals with a superb 3-2 victory away at AFC Bournemouth Under-21s.

Sonny Perkins’ stoppage time winner rounds off a gruelling away schedule for Scott Gardner’s side, having already travelled to Chelsea, Arsenal and Luton this month.

After victory on the south coast, Whites boss Gardner spoke exclusively to leedsunited.com.

“I was a little disappointed with the first half,” he explained. “I thought off the ball we weren’t as aggressive as we would expect and that isn’t an excuse with the amount of games and the travelling we have done. That is something we discussed at half time.

“Other than the goal, I thought the second half we controlled it and were pretty comfortable really, other than that moment right at the end.

“To say they have played three games in a week, to put that performance in physically and mentally, I thought they were outstanding.

“I think it sums them up as a group, where they are, where they are going and where they could end up at the end of the season. That is credit to the staff that work with them every day and how they work and how they are as people, so I’m really pleased.

“With this and the FA Youth Cup win, it shows the pathway because both teams are relatively young. It shows the strength we have in the younger groups and the ability we have to move people up and the progression we can give these players. They are stepping up and they are showing their worth.

“Looking ahead to Chelsea on Monday, I think we are all delighted there is another game. We have to pick ourselves up but I think tonight they have shown the resilience they have and that they are physically capable of doing it, so we will push them again!”
