Sonny Perkins grabbed a last-gasp winner for Leeds united Under-21s as they progressed to the Premier League Cup quarter finals with a stunning 3-2 comeback victory away at AFC Bournemouth Under-21s.

Heading into the last 10 minutes, a goal of the season contender from Luca Thomas levelled the tie on the south coast after an earlier Perkins goal, before the striker was on hand to win it in the dying moments in front of the travelling supporters.

The hosts started brightly as referee Ryan Atkin got proceedings underway in Eastleigh, with Finn Tonks' deep free kick evading everyone inside the area before Kian Tydeman's follow up effort was blocked well by the Whites defence.

Tydeman was again involved shortly afterwards, sliding a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Jonny Stuttle would have put his side a goal to the good had he sorted his feet out, but the Cherries forward saw the ball race away from him.

The early pressure eventually told moments later, with Balraj Landa curling an impressive finish beyond the reach of Harry Christy after good work down the Bournemouth left from Noa Boutin.

The goal seemed to wake Scott Gardner's side up, with United immediately on the front foot as they searched for a quick-fire response. Charlie Allen clipped a superb ball over the top looking for Perkins, but the forward was unable to beat Cameron Plain from a tight angle.

The influence of in-form Allen was beginning to grow, with the Northern Irish forward stinging the palms of Plain with a fierce drive from the edge of the area.

Bournemouth had a glorious chance to grab a second courtesy of captain Dominic Sadi, but the midfielder fired over from six yards out following good play down the left from Tydeman.

Cuba Cline was then on hand to prevent a certain second, making a superb last-ditch clearance after Stuttle had flicked the ball past Christy and looked destined to tap home.

The Whites went into the break on level terms through Perkins as he rounded off a scintillating counter-attack down the right. Allen found the overlapping Max McFadden on the edge of the box who showed a fine piece of skill to chop inside his defender, picking out the onrushing Perkins who guided the ball home.

What would prove to be an eventful second half got underway with the hosts retaking the lead as Sadi was on hand to bundle home a rebound after Kris Moore had made a great block to deny Euan Pollock.

United almost responded immediately through Charlie Crew, but the Welsh midfielder was unable to direct Cline's low cross on target.

Gardner's side had chances to level the tie with Moore first heading Crew's corner wide before Joe Snowdon's long-range effort forced Plain into a fine diving save.

As openings came and went for both sides, it was a moment of sheer magic from Luca Thomas that drew the Whites level. Good work from Joe Richards set up Thomas, who curled a sublime effort in off the underside of the crossbar from 30 yards out, with Cherries keeper Plain powerless to deny the winger’s wonderstike!

As the clock struck 90, the fourth official added on 10 minutes as both sides desperately went searching for a winner. Harold William made a fantastic goal-saving clearance to block a Perkins effort, but the forward would have the last laugh moments later.

Allen threaded a through ball into the path of Perkins who charged into the box, composing himself before firing past Plain in front of the travelling supporters to spark wild celebrations at the Silverlake Stadium.

The drama wasn’t finished yet as Bournemouth piled bodies forward looking to take the tie into extra-time, with goalkeeper Plain first heading an in-swinging corner just wide of Christy’s far post!

The Cherries came forward again and would have equalised, if not for a magnificent reaction save from Christy, before the rebound was fired wide as the full-time whistle blew!
