Leeds United Under-23s put in a superb display to overcome Liverpool Under-23s in front of an impressive 8,656 fans at Elland Road! Goals from Jack Jenkins, Crysencio Summerville and Max Dean completed a comfortable three-goal success for Mark Jackson’s side.

The Whites were on the front foot from the off and nearly went into the lead inside 30 seconds, when Summerville had a chance on goal. Marcelo Pitaluga was off his line and the United winger attempted to take advantage of that, but the ‘keeper recovered well and saved.

The next to go close was Archie Gray. After Summerville had caused more problems to win the foul, the young midfielder had an effort well saved again by Pitaluga.

Two more chances came at either end, with the Reds registering their first one. Leighton Clarkson went close, seeing his effort deflected just wide. Straight back down the other end, this time Max Dean shot narrowly past the post.

After good sustained pressure, Leeds did take the lead. Summerville was tormenting the visiting defence and after breaking into the box he saw his shot saved, with Jenkins alert to cleverly finish from the rebound!

Amari Miller was then the next attacking Leeds player to go close, as he picked up a loose pass and drilled his strike just wide of the post. The referee brought the first half to a close shortly after and sent Jackson’s side into the dressing room with a deserved lead.

HALF TIME: Leeds United 1-0 Liverpool

Sean McGurk came on for Nohan Kenneh at the start of the second half - in what was the only change from either side. The Reds started on the front foot and went in search of a leveller, coming close when Kaide Gordon hit the side netting.

After an exchange of possession and attempts on goal, which in general resulted in set-plays, the game became relatively even in this Premier League 2 encounter. Kris Moore had also prevented an almost certain leveller for the away side, with a last-ditch challenge.

As the game approached it’s conclusion, the half really came into life. Summerville again was rampaging down the wing and after a brilliant pass from Dean, the winger ran into the box and was brought down.

Owen Beck, Liverpool skipper, was sent-off for the foul and the Whites had a penalty. Summerville dusted himself down to step up and send Pitaluga the wrong way and almost certainly secure the three points for Leeds!

However, the action wasn’t finished despite the two-goal and one-man advantage, as Leeds went in search of another, and found one! Once again it was from the penalty spot, and once again Summerville was the creator as he drew another foul from Clarkson this time.

The taker was swapped which allowed the hard-working Dean to step up, send Pitaluga the wrong way once again and net the third of what had been a thoroughly entertaining and impressive evening at Elland Road.

Leeds move up to 11th with victory going above both Chelsea and Blackburn, three points behind Liverpool who occupy 10th spot. Jackson’s side are next in action in the Premier League Cup away at Mansfield next Monday.
