Mark Jackson: I’m extremely proud of the team

U18 head coach on Manchester United defeat.

Leeds United’s Under-18s head coach Mark Jackson spoke to LUTV following Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth round tie with Manchester United.

The Red Devils narrowly defeated the 10 man Leeds 1-0 at Old Trafford, despite a valiant effort from the young Whites side.

Jackson spoke about his sides performance and about the 1,400 sold out allocation in the away end for the derby fixture.

“To use the word proud is an understatement, I’m extremely proud of the team,” said Jackson.

“I’m delighted for the players, that they’ve managed to experience playing on this stage and put in the performance that they put in.

“We didn’t quite get the result, but from 1-11 and the squad members, worked tirelessly to get that result and never let the desire go to keep working and fighting and putting Manchester United under pressure right until the final whistle.

“Even going down to 10 men, we showed fight and determination and I think that was appreciated by our fans at the end.

“Likewise at the end, seeing the players appreciate our fans for coming out an supporting us in that way, it typifies what Leeds United is about.

“We try and push our players and expose our players to different things, test them and push the boundaries a little bit.

“This was a test, but they came through it really well and will take many positives which they can take forward both as a team and individuals.

“Some of the players haven’t played in front of fans like ours before and now have a taste for what the Leeds fans are like and we knew it was going to be good.

“From my point of view as a coach and on behalf of the players, I’d like to thank the travelling fans and parents who have come to support the players, it is really appreciated.

“The players deserved that and the fans deserved the performance the players gave today- wholehearted and committed.”
