Leeds United’s Under-23s exciting run in the Premier League Cup came to an end at the semi-final stage, as Newcastle United ran out 3-0 winners at Guiseley’s Nethermoor Park.

Leeds had the first real opportunity of the match, after Bryce Hosannah won Leeds a corner, the ball fell to Gaetano Berardi at the set-piece and he fired into the side netting from a narrow angle.

Elias Sorensen threatened for the visitors, the ball sat up kindly for him to hit a half volley on goal from 20 yards, forcing Bailey Peacock-Farrell into a decent save.

Leeds almost broke the deadlock in the 24th minute.  Hosannah superbly burst into the Newcastle box and his low ball across the face of goal was tipped on by Nathan Harker into the path of Ryan Edmondson.  He saw his effort saved by the Newcastle stooper and loop up in the air.  Newcastle scrambled to clear, before Jordan Stevens fired the ball back into the box, with his cross hitting Edmondson and bouncing just wide.

Six minutes later Izzy Brown tried his luck from 20 yards, his attempt was well struck, but was just wide of the mark.

Berardi then did well down the left flank, before Jack Clarke laid the ball off to Ryan Edmondson to strike from the edge of the box, but his effort didn’t have enough power on it to really trouble Harker.

On the stroke of half time, Clarke did really well to cut into the Newcastle box from the left wing, but he couldn’t keep his strike down from a narrow angle, with the two sides going in at the break level.

Newcastle were awarded a penalty four minutes into the second half, Hugo Diaz felled Callum Roberts and Kelland Watts made no mistake from the spot.

The Magpies doubled their lead in the 54th minute, Roberts took advantage of a mistake from Hosannah at the back, weaved his way into the box and found the back of the net.

The visitors again went close soon after, Thomas Allan did well to break down the right, before laying the ball off to Matthew Longstaff to strike, but his effort was just too high.

Sorensen then had the ball in the back of the net for a third time for the visitors after latching onto a through ball by Longstaff, but he saw his goal ruled out by the offside flag.

The Whites almost pulled a goal back in the 76th minute, Brown scooped the ball to get Stevens to the byline, he fizzed the ball across the face of goal, before Bogusz saw a shot well blocked.

Newcastle sealed their place in the final with four minutes of normal time remaining, Leeds switched off at the back and Sorensen latched onto a throw from Allan, raced into the area and slotted the ball home.
