Daniel Farke: We had to dig in

Whites boss speaks to LUTV after victory over Hull City.

Leeds United secured an important victory in the race for automatic promotion, as late goals from Crysencio Summerville and Dan James helped the Whites triumph over Hull City at Elland Road.

The two sides went into the break level when Fabio Carvalho cancelled out Sam Byram’s opener, but late goals from the two wingers saw Leeds edge out their Yorkshire rivals.

After the game, Whites boss Daniel Farke spoke to LUTV.

“I am pretty proud of the lads. Obviously, it was difficult for many of them, it was a third game in six days because most of them played for their countries on Tuesday.

“We had many problems today. Glen Kamara played even though he had a cold, but we are a bit thin on central midfielders at the moment!

“The same also with Sam Byram, he told me at half time he couldn’t sprint anymore, but the only option was Jamie Shackleton who is also coming back from injury and hasn’t played for a while.

“We dug in against a really good Hull side who caused us many problems in the first half. When you have such a busy and crazy schedule, you have to dig in to grind out results and this is what we did.

“We didn’t lose our nerves, we didn’t open the spaces in order to invite them for counterattacks. They have had really good results, especially against the top teams. We had a really good second half and, in the end, in a tight game against a really good opponent, I think it was a well-deserved win.

“Obviously, we have players who can make things happen and let their quality shine, but I think we created more than enough chances. We allowed them more possession in the first half, we wanted to do this because they are a side that always want to invite their opponents into traps and, if you go into the traps, you concede. This is what they did against the top sides and we didn’t want to do this.

“Our problem was we weren’t that great in possession, we lost the ball a bit too quickly. It was important to not lose the nerves in the second half and to step it up with the quality in our possession and be a bit more aggressive to win more duels and create better chances.

“We missed some big chances but we are pleased to score the penalty and, once they opened everything, get the third goal through Dan James. It is good for the confidence of the offensive players.”
