Memory Match: Leeds United 3-2 Millwall

Memory Match: Leeds United 3-2 Millwall

A look back to a memorable clash from 2019.

Leeds United take on Millwall at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, with the teams getting their latest Sky Bet Championship clash underway at 3pm.

When these two met earlier in the season at The New Den, home of Millwall, Leeds left as comfortable winners thanks to a 0-3 scoreline. Overall, previous form is spilt between these two, as from 41 games its five drawn and 18 wins each.

This ‘Memory Match’, written by Ben Scott, focuses on 30th March 2019 at Elland Road, in the same division as they will meet in this Sunday. United ran out winners in that one, but it was not without thrills and spills in the making towards the 3-2 success.

After 10 minutes had been played, the South London outfit went a goal up after they had the better of the early exchanges winning some free-kicks and digging out a few shots. Eventually one beat Bailey Peacock-Farrell, coming from a Ben Thompson header central to goal.

The Whites then looked to respond and had pressure from set-plays themselves but couldn’t take advantage, before then another big opportunity went, as the hosts were unable to convert a penalty.

Leeds still looked for the leveller though, with Jack Harrison and Pablo Hernandez going close and it would be the latter on 34 minutes that brought the scores level. He was assisted by fellow right-sided player Luke Ayling and the Spanish attacker hit a sweet right-foot shot into the left of the goal.

Into the second half and Leeds still held the better of the early play. They had two corners, from which Roberts and Hernandez again took aim but without producing a goal they craved.

With 54 minutes on the clock, Millwall won and converted a penalty of their own. Ben Marshall was the player to score, putting his side 1-2 ahead.

Leading Leeds towards the visiting goal through sheer desire and skill was that man again, Hernandez. He had two more efforts at levelling the match before left-back Barry Douglas, who had replaced Alioski, crossed in for right-back Ayling to head home on the 71st minute.

The rest of the match saw Leeds push and probe the Millwall back-line in search of a winner, and it was that star man Hernandez who found it with 83 minutes played. He fired in a classy finish from close range as Roberts laid on a clever ball, sparking jubilant celebrations.
