Leeds United suffered defeat on the road against Birmingham City in the Sky Bet Championship, as Jutkiewicz’s stoppage time penalty secured the Blues all three points.

Manager Daniel Farke made five changes from the opening day Championship draw with Cardiff City, with Charlie Cresswell, Sam Byram, Joe Gelhardt, Ian Poveda and Jamie Shackleton all coming into the starting line-up.

Ahead of kick-off both sides paid their respect to the late Trevor Francis, following the sad passing of the former Birmingham City player and England international in July.

Leeds had the first chance of the game inside 11 minutes.  Luke Ayling floated a lovely cross to the back post and Dan James controlled well, before seeing his strike superbly blocked.

The Whites again put together another good move, with this time Ayling teeing up Ampadu on the edge of the Birmingham box, but he couldn’t keep his effort down.

Leeds looked solid at the back throughout the first half and Birmingham’s first opportunity didn’t come until the 39th minute, with Kevin Long heading wide at a corner.

Both sides showed good build up play throughout the first period, but struggled for creativity in the final third, with the two sides going in level at the break.

Half time: Birmingham City 0-0 Leeds United

After the break, Birmingham went close when Siriki Dembele broke down the left flank and into the box, before finding Keshi Anderson, but he saw his shot well blocked.

At the other end, James fired a dangerous low cross-cum-shot, which Ruddy palmed into the direction of Gelhardt, but Birmingham managed to scramble clear before the Leeds forward could get a shot away.

Dembele fired well over from range for the hosts, before Leeds introduced Georginio Rutter, who almost had an immediate impact.  Coming on as Leeds won a set-piece on the left flank, he was found at the back post and scuffed an effort, before spinning and seeing his second strike brilliantly blocked.

Scott Hogan had a good chance for Birmingham in the 70th minute, he was found by a Dembele cross, but could only fire a volley over when well placed.

Another good Leeds move saw Ampadu, Poveda and James combine, with the latter played into the Birmingham box and he saw a curling strike deflect wide.

With 10 minutes of regular time remaining, the hosts had a great chance, when Long had a free header at a corner, but he put the chance wide.

Whites stopper Illan Meslier was called into action when Juninho Bacuna fired from 25 yards, with the Frenchman making a good stop.

Leeds then went close from a corner, James delivered and Byram’s near post flick on bounced agonizingly wide of the post, whilst Hogan fired wide for the hosts following a cross from Ethan Laird.

It was the hosts who won it at the death after James felled Laird and the hosts were awarded a penalty and Jutkiewicz made no mistake from the spot.
