Leeds United were defeated 2-0 in Oslo, Norway, against Manchester United, as pre-season ahead of the 2023/24 campaign got under way.

The hosts almost took the lead in the 10th minute, Amad Diallo did well, teeing up Hannibal Mejbri, but Kristoffer Klaesson made a great save to deny him.  Following this the rebound fell back to Diallo, but he couldn’t keep his effort down, when well placed.

A minute later Manchester United went close again.  Mason Mount stole possession from Jeremiah Mullen, before trying to lob Klaesson, but his attempt was just too high.

Leeds nearly created an opening when Luis Sinisterra did well on the left and found Ian Poveda in the Manchester United box, but Mejbri made a brilliant block and tackle to deny him.

Poveda then turned provider when he crossed in low from the left, finding Greenwood in the box who tried to turn it home, but he couldn’t get the better of Tom Heaton in the Manchester United goal.

Alvaro Fernandez headed wide from a Manchester United corner, before, at the other end, Georgino Rutter put in a lovely cross, but it was just out of the reach of Sam Greenwood at full stretch.

Just before the break, Diallo did well to cut inside and make room for a shot from the edge of the Leeds box, but he curled his strike over the bar.

Half time: Leeds United 0-0 Manchester United

Both Leeds and Manchester United overhauled the teams at the break, with the Whites making 10 changes and the Reds 11.

Leeds almost went ahead 11 minutes into the second period.  Luke Ayling won a corner following some fine skill by Joe Gelhardt and from the resulting set-piece, Pascal Struijk headed just over.

Manchester United take the lead in the 66th minute, Isak Hanson played in Noam Emeran and he slotted home past Dani van den Heuvel in the Leeds net.

Archie Gray almost levelled the scores with a rocket of a strike from long range, which narrowly missed the top corner, hitting the side netting.

Patrick Bamford then rounded Matej Kovar after he was played through on goal, but the flag was raised for offside.

Gelhardt struck off target from 25 yards, before Manchester United sealed the win, when Joe Hugill converted Emeran’s low ball into the box.
