UNBEATEN RUN ENDS

Development Squad beaten by league leaders...

The Development Squad’s unbeaten home record came to an end at the hands of a strong Huddersfield Town side on Monday.

The league leaders, inspired by midfield duo Sean Scannell and Duane Holmes, emerged 2-0 winners at Thorp Arch.

The visitors could have taken the lead midway through the first half after Holmes was released through on goal, but he shot wide with only Alex Cairns to beat.

United’s response came courtesy of a Chris Dawson shot, which was saved, after good work by Lewis Cook, and Dawson turned provider for Kalvin Phillips who was denied by a good save.

The visitors did carve out another opening on the stroke of half-time, though, when Christian Lopez narrowly failed to get on the end of a good ball into the box from Joel Lolly.

United had an opportunity at the start of the second period when Gboly Ariyibi was denied in a one-on-one situation and while Lewis Walters also had a shot deflected wide, it was Huddersfield who started to gain the upper hand.

Holmes sent a shot just wide of the post and Afolabi Coker had to be at his best to deny Harry Bunn. Matt Crooks also headed over the bar before the deadlock was broken on 74 minutes when Lopez converted after Cairns had cut out the initial cross.

Huddersfield were initially denied a second thanks to some great defending by Luke Booker, but Scannell made no mistake in stoppage time when he was allowed to make an advancing run before converting with ease.

United: Cairns, Thompson (Purver), Coker, Bryan, Coyle, Phillips (Booker), Cook, Dawson, Ariyibi, Walters (Parkin), Poleon. Subs (not used): Atkinson, Roper.
