Coach hails progress of young players...

Senior professional development coach Neil Redfearn was disappointed to see the Development Squad’s unbeaten home run to come an end this week – but says it has been a season of progress for the club’s young players.

It was a young team which went down 2-0 to a more experienced Huddersfield Town side at Thorp Arch.

“It was a very good performance,” said Neil. “They had a very strong side, there was a lot who had played in their first team, and we had only really had Dominic and Zac with any real experience.

“We had a first-year captain in Lewis Cook, who was outstanding, and if you look at us, we have 14 young pros. We have five in our first team squad, five on loan who are in somebody else’s and four in our Development Squad. We can’t look past that, and it’s an important point.

“More often than not we’ve been a young side. This is the first time we have been beaten at home this season which is a good record. At the start of the season, we’d only won one from our first four, but we’ve picked up since then and as a young side we have to take heart from that.

“I thought it was a good performance against Huddersfield, we just didn’t have the cutting edge in front of goal.

“There were good performances from the likes of Affy Coker and Richard Bryan, against the likes of Sean Scannell and Harry Bunn, who they paid a few quid for from Man City, so it was probably more of a good work-out for us than it was for them.”
