WE DESERVED THE WIN - REDFEARN

Neil Redfearn gives his reaction to Development Squad draw…

Senior professional development coach Neil Redfearn was left frustrated with a draw against Barnsley this week after seeing his side dominate the game.

Redfearn’s Development Squad drew 1-1 at Thorp Arch on Monday afternoon. The Tykes took the lead just before the interval but Zac Thompson levelled the tie prior to the hour mark.

The coach was pleased with his team’s performance and says that with the possession they had they should have been comfortable winners.

“I thought that we deserved to win the game,” said Neil. “If you look at the game we must have had 60 or 70 per cent possession.

“We were round their box a lot and created chances. We didn’t shoot enough if I’m being honest. We need to get more shots off at goal. But as a performance it was very good.

“I thought that we played some great football and it was a great performance. The pleasing thing is that we had the ball for long periods.

“We played out from the back and our destiny was in our own hands. We were prepared to pass it and we deserved more than the point.”

The side that started the Under-21 Professional Development League One fixture included a number of senior players including Adam Drury and Marius Zaliukas.

“Adam Drury is a great professional and he applies himself day in and day out,” said Redfearn. “He hasn’t had much of a sniff in regards to the first team but he has done it properly and he has got to take get credit for that.

“Marius looked back to his usual self. He looked strong and composed at the back. We deserved a cleansheet and Marius was instrumental in that.

"Both Adam and Marius came into the team and out a good shift in.

“It is better if they have had minutes of football. Playing in these games is different to training and running.

“Match fitness is a different sort of fitness and these games serve the professionals well.”
