New signing happy to miss Wembley appearance...

New loan signing Connor Wickham is more than happy to swap one London venue for another this weekend as he looks to make his mark at Leeds United.

The 20-year-old could have been involved for Sunderland in their Capital One Cup final meeting with Manchester City, but the young striker has passed by on a potential Wembley appearance in favour of a Loftus Road outing for Leeds at QPR.

“I hope I would have been involved at Wembley,” said the striker. “I helped the team get through to the final so I would have liked to have been there but first things first, I want to play football and if I’m not going to play - regardless of whether it’s at Wembley or not - I want to play. I said to my agent ‘get me to Leeds.’

“I need to play football, whether it’s at Wembley or anywhere in the country. Good luck to the lads, I’ll watch the game, but I’m here.”

Saturday could see Brian McDermott unveil a new-look strike-force if Connor is handed his debut. The former Ipswich man would be partnered with Ross McCormack, who already has 23 goals to his name this season.

“I’ve spoken to Ross,” said Connor. "He’s a good lad and I’ve seen him score goals for a number of years in the Championship. He’s a brilliant player.

“Hopefully if we link up and play together we can both do the same job and stick the ball in the net.”

United will head for QPR on Saturday looking for a victory to kick-start the push for a Play-Off finish. The maths still suggest it is perfectly achievable, and a win at Loftus Road could provide a springboard.

“The manager’s drilled it into all the players, I’m sure he has,” added Connor. “We need to make the play-offs. That’s where we want to be and we’ve got 15 games. We need to make the push and then who knows.”
