Cardiff City: Memorable Matches

We take a look at some previous encounters.

With Sky Bet Championship football just days away from returning, we look back at four victories over Sunday's opponents Cardiff City.

Saturday, 29 February 1972- Cardiff City 0-2 Leeds United

Don Revie’s high-flying Leeds United team fresh from thrashing Manchester United 5-1, travelled to Ninian Park for an FA Cup Fifth Round tie. Leeds dominated the first half against Second Division Cardiff and goalkeeper Billy Irwin was tested on numerous occasions. He saved first from Eddie Gray and then saved a Mick Jones shot, before diving to prevent Peter Lorimer opening the scoring. The Leeds pressure told and with 10 minutes of the first half left, Lorimer whipped in a corner and Johnny Giles guided the ball low into the net. Cardiff battled back, but Leeds defended effectively and in numbers. The home team took shots and forced several corners, but Gary Sprake could not be beaten. Any hope of a cup upset for the home supporters ended in the 84th minute when Lorimer crossed for Allan Clarke who headed down and Giles dispatched it into the roof of the net.  Leeds of course went on to win the competition in 1972.

Tuesday, 3 November 2015- Leeds United 1-0 Cardiff City

Leeds hosted Russell Slade’s Cardiff City side as the Whites looked to climb up the Championship table. The game didn’t come into life until the second half as Alex Mowatt picked up the ball 40 yards out and carried it before unleashing a thunderous strike into the top corner to give Leeds the lead. Chris Wood should’ve sealed the game after he rounded the goalkeeper but couldn’t tap home. Despite that, Leeds held on and sealed Steve Evans his first victory as manager.

Tuesday, 8 March 2016- Cardiff City 0-2 Leeds United

The Whites visited the Bluebirds looking for a first away win in over three months. Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri was in inspired form as he helped withstand heavy pressure in the first half, keeping the game goalless. With 36 minutes on the clock, Leeds opened the scoring against the run of play. Mirco Antenucci started a counter attack and played a delightful through ball to Souleymane Doukara who placed the ball past David Marshall in the Cardiff net. Leeds almost doubled the lead early in the second half but Antenucci saw his shot cleared off the line. Defender Fabio was sent off for the home side and Antenucci did get on the score-sheet, wrapping up the points with seconds to go.

Saturday, 17 September 2016- Cardiff City 0-2 Leeds United

Leeds travelled to the Cardiff City Stadium in this early season Championship encounter. The hosts had the better of the first half, as they dominated from set pieces and Sean Morrison hit the post with a bullet header. Icelandic midfielder Aron Gunnarson also hit the post with a shot from the edge of the box.  Leeds then began to dominate and Pablo Hernandez nearly broke the deadlock with an effort from outside the box, but Ben Amos saved well. With just over an hour gone, Hernandez whipped in a corner which saw Matthew Connolly foul Pontus Jansson in the box and the referee point to the spot.  Chris Wood stepped up and converting the spot kick to give Leeds the lead.  With eight minutes to go, Hernandez sealed the win with a brilliant curling effort, ensuring the long trip home was a happy one.
