Leeds United suffered a first away defeat of the 2019/20 campaign, going down by a single goal at the Valley against Charlton Athletic.

The Whites made a bright start to the match, producing a flurry of chances.  Patrick Bamford’s low cross was turned just wide by Naby Sarr and from the resulting corner, Dillon Phillips made a fine save to tip a Ben White attempt around the post.  Liam Cooper then saw a header deflect off target.

Mateusz Klich was next to try his luck with a curling strike from the edge of the box, which deflected wide.

Ezgjan Alioski put in a good cross from the left flank which was met by Patrick Bamford, but his header into the ground bounced off target.

Alioski then found Bamford on the edge of the Charlton box and he turned superbly before striking at goal, but his attempt was well blocked.  Stuart Dallas then put the ball into the box and the ball came out to Alioski, whose effort looked destined for the bottom corner, but for another last ditch block.

Liam Cooper was next to be denied at a Whites corner, with Phillips pulling off another fine save to keep the scores level.

Klich then tested Phillips in the Charlton goal, with a strike from 25 yards, but it was the visitors who went ahead in the 32nd minute, despite Leeds’ dominance.  Macauley Bonne won the home side a corner and it was him who bundled the ball home from the set-piece after Kiko Casilla had denied Tom Lockyer.

Helder Costa had a good opportunity to equalise for Leeds when a Jack Harrison cross found him in the box, but he fired over.

Marcelo Bielsa introduced Adam Forshaw and Eddie Nketiah at the break, as he looked to mix things up in his Leeds side to get a positive result.

It was the visitors who had the first chance of the second period from a free-kick 25 yards from goal, with Josh Cullen forcing Kiko Casilla into action.

At the other end Dallas put a dangerous low ball into the box, which was turned just wide by Addicks midfielder Darren Pratley.

Harrison struck wide from the edge of the box, before Klich hit a 25 yard attempt over the crossbar, following some quick thinking by Kalvin Phillips at a free-kick.

Phillips saw a free-kick blocked by the wall, whilst Klich saw a strike blocked from the edge of the box as Leeds continued to press.

Nketiah had a good opportunity with 15 minutes remaining, Harrison delivered a nice cross from the left, but the forward couldn’t find the target.

A Leeds corner, led to a second ball into the box by Phillips, which was just a whisker wide from finding the bottom corner.

Nketiah saw a low shot across goal go just wide, with Helder Costa unable to poke home at the back post, before Harrison did well to weave his way into the Charlton box, before firing over.

Leeds continued to press in the closing stages, but it was Charlton who held on for the three points.
