Leeds United were winners of a five goal thriller at the Etihad Campus against Spanish outfit Girona on Saturday evening.

The first chance of the game fell to Girona’s number nine, Marc Gual, after 10 minutes as his 20 yard strike sailed just wide of Kamil Miazek’s post.

Leeds then opened the scoring as Jack Harrison cut inside and fired the ball across field into the path of Clarke Oduor who slotted home to give Leeds an early lead.

Stuart Dallas almost doubled the lead, but his volley was just off target following some good build up play between him and Ezgjan Alioksi.

Half way through the first half Barry Douglas whipped a teasing ball across the face of goal, which narrowly missed Harrison and Alioski.

Leeds then deservedly grabbed their second of the afternoon as Jordan Stevens fired in a cross which saw Harrison connect well with his half volley and the ball nestled into the top corner to double the advantage.

Half time: Girona 0- 2 Leeds United

Leeds started brightly after the break and nearly put the game to bed early on in the second half as Stevens intercepted a mis-hit back pass and rounded Jose Aurelio Suarez but couldn’t slot the ball home.

In the 63rd minute, Harrison almost added to his goal tally with a powerful 25 yard strike however it cannoned off the post and Girona cleared.

Five minutes later Girona were awarded a penalty, following an alleged push by Douglas.  Alex Grannell stepped up and converted calmly to give Girona a lifeline.

Shortly after Stevens played in Dallas with a delightful through ball and Dallas was taken down which saw the referee award the second penalty of the game. Alioski stepped up and dispatched the penalty into the top left corner to restore the two goal lead.

Johan Mojica then got his name on the scoresheet for Girona and gave the Spanish side a way back into the game with seven minutes to go.

There was no late drama though, as Leeds hung on to leave the Etihad Campus with the victory.
