Lilley completes comeback in first Premier League meeting

After a wait of over six years, the Yorkshire derby returned for the first time in Premier League.

A disastrous opening 30 minutes saw George Graham’s Whites go 2-0 down at Oakwell courtesy of goals from Andy Liddell and Ashley Ward. Alf-Inge Haaland reduced the deficit with a header in the 35th minute before a three-minute double secured a memorable win.

First Rod Wallace latched on to Nigel Martyn’s long ball and finished calmly in the 79th minute before a close-range strike from Derek Lilley gave us the three points. We would go on to finish fifth while Barnsley ended the season in 19th in their only campaign in the Premier League.

Six goals and a red card

There was no shortage of drama at Elland Road in a six-goal Championship thriller. The visitors led inside two minutes thanks to Jason Shackell, before goals from Luciano Becchio and Max Gradel from the spot gave the Whites a half-time lead.

Matt Hill pulled Barnsley level shortly after the break as Bradley Johnson saw red for us for a second bookable offence.

Leeds battled on and Gradel’s second in the 70th minute gave us an unlikely lead before Kieran Trippier ended the scoring on the 82nd minute. Leeds went on to finish seventh and just miss out on the Championhip Play-Offs.

Batty starts in FA Cup thrashing

Having played out a 1-1 draw at Oakwell in the FA Cup third round, the replay saw the Whites deliver a ruthless display against their Yorkshire neighbours.

A Mark Smith own goal 84 seconds in set the tone, before a Lee Chapman header doubled the lead inside 14 minutes.

A Gary McAllister goal in the second-half and a late Gordon Strachan penalty completed the rout for Howard Wilkinson’s side who recorded an eighth successive home win.

Whites complete double on way to Division Two title

Just seven days after a 3-1 home win, Leeds completed the double over their rivals on their way to the Division Two title.

A double from Jack Swann and a Percy Whipp goal secured the victory in front of the Elland Road faithful. In the reverse fixture Joe Richmond grabbed a brace with Joe Harris also on the score sheet.  Swann would finish as our top scorer for the season with 18 goals.

Viduka strikes in FA Cup third round

Barnsley’s Premier League relegation in 1998 saw nearly three years pass until we would meet again, this time in the FA Cup third round.

Competing across Premier League and UEFA Champions League, a Leeds side that included Rio Ferdinand, Alan Smith and Robbie Keane earned a narrow win against a manager-less Barnsley.  Mark Viduka’s goal after nine minutes proved enough, in a season that would see the Australian finish as the Whites’ top scorer with 22 goals.
