HUDDERSFIELD: GARRY MONK'S VERDICT

HUDDERSFIELD: GARRY MONK POST MATCH 10.9.16

United boss reflects on Saturday's defeat...

Garry Monk felt neither side deserved to claim all three points after seeing United suffer a 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town in a Yorkshire derby that failed to live up to its billing at Elland Road.

Aaron Mooy’s 55th-minute strike – one of the afternoon’s rare efforts on goal – clinched the victory for the visitors to ensure a forgettable return to domestic action for Monk’s side.

“I thought the game wasn’t the greatest spectacle for a derby – from both sides,” said the United boss.

“Both teams cancelled each other out and there wasn’t really much action at either end.

"I thought both teams were trying to limit any mistakes and from the one mistake we made – not closing the ball down quick enough – they scored from distance with a strike.

“But I don’t think either team did enough to win the game today – it looked like a 0-0 game to me, but unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the result.

“It wasn’t through a lack of effort from ourselves – it was just one of those games where both teams cancelled each other out.

“You could tell by the atmosphere in the ground that there wasn’t much for both sets of fans to really get their teeth into.

“We didn’t get going but I think that was down to the way the two teams were set up – a lot of the game was played in midfield and there wasn’t much goalmouth action.

“Both teams had exactly the same amount of shots on target. Unfortunately for us, one of their shots went in and we couldn’t find an equaliser.”
