1956: Born Huyton, Liverpool, June 20.
1974: Signs professional forms for Bolton.
1977: Wins first of six England Under-21 caps against Scotland.
1978: Wins Division Two championship with Bolton.
1982: Moves to Everton for £60,000.
1984: Wins the FA Cup with Everton, beating Watford 2-0 in final.
1985: Everton win the League Championship and European Cup Winners’ Cup but are denied treble by Manchester United in FA Cup final.
June 9 — Makes full England debut as substitute in the 1-0 defeat by Mexico.
1986: Plays in the FA Cup final defeat to Liverpool.
June — Stars in the Mexico World Cup after Ray Wilkins’ sending off hands him chance. England reach the semi-final but are beaten by eventual winners Argentina.
1987: Captains Everton to the League title again.
1988: Makes his 13th and last appearance for England as substitute in 1-0 victory over Switzerland.
1989: February — Joins QPR on a free transfer.
December — Moves to Manchester City.
1990: November — Appointed player-manager of the Maine Road club.
1993: August — Sacked by City chairman Peter Swales.
1995: Appointed Sunderland manager and helps the club stave off relegation to Division Two.
1996: Guides Sunderland to the Premiership after winning First Division.
1997: Sunderland are relegated after just one season in the top flight.
1998: After coming third in Division One, Sunderland lose on penalties in the play-off final to Charlton.
1999: April 16 — A 3-1 win at Barnsley clinches the First Division Championship again for Sunderland.
2000: Sunderland finish seventh and just miss out on Europe.
2001: January 1 — Sunderland move third in the Premiership with 2-1 win over Ipswich.
2002: October 7 — Leaves Stadium of Light.
2003: March 21 — Takes temporary charge of Leeds United until the end of the season after departure of Terry Venables.
2003: March 23 - Loses first game 3-1 away to Liverpool
2003: April 5th - Record biggest win of the season with a 6-1 win at Charlton. Mark Viduka scores a hat-trick.
2003: May 4th - After defeats against Southampton and Blackburn, a win against Fulham and a draw against Spurs, Leeds win 3-2 away to Arsenal to secure their Premiership future.
2003: May 9th - Appointed full-time manager of Leeds United.
