Eddie Gray’s younger brother chose to follow in his footsteps when he signed for United in the summer of 1970. With a sweet left foot, Frank scored on his full debut under Don Revie and played in both the 1973 Cup-Winners and 1975 European Cup finals. He became a Scotland international, winning 32 caps. Under Jimmy Armfield, Frank showed skill and versatility, regularly playing in midfield. It came as a shock then, when Jimmy Adamson chose to cash in on the £500,000 Brian Clough offered in 1979. With Nottingham Forest Frank won a European Cup winners medal before making a prodigal son’s return, when Allan Clarke handed back £300,000 of Forest’s money in 1981. Sadly, he couldn’t improve a team doomed to relegation.
Strange but true: Frank was sold by big bro’ Eddie to Sunderland in 1985.
