Signed by Howard Wilkinson from Wimbledon for £650,000 to add steel to the side. Jones already had a reputation as a hard man but dismayed team-mates by giving an Anderlecht striker a bloody nose in his first pre-season “friendly”. Thereafter, however, Jones controlled his aggression and played a crucial part in the 1989/90 Division Two promotion seasons. Booked only twice during it, he was an instant fan’s favourite while displaying a passing range that stunned his critics. In Division One, Jones couldn’t break into a new midfield of Batty, Strachan, Speed and McAllister and was sold to Sheffield United. Vinnie later found movie success via Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.
Strange but true: He is the only Hollywood superstar with a Leeds United tattoo.
