Whyte formed half of the 1992 title-winning central defensive partnership.  Alongside Chris Fairclough, few opposing strikers relished playing against Whyte, and his uncompromising tackling and bravery with blocks and headers was crucial to Leeds’ success.  Whyte, who had a curious thinning-in-chunks hair problem, started out at Arsenal and played for a number of clubs in England as well as, in the US, Los Angeles and Detroit Neon.  The master of the backpass, he was never quite the same after the introduction of the rule that forbade it, but received a rapturous reception when he returned with Rushden & Diamonds in the FA Cup in 1999.

Strange but true: His deceptively casual lollop earned him the nickname “Huggy” after Huggy Bear in Starsky & Hutch.
