Played For Both: Rotherham United & Leeds United

We take a look through the players who have featured for both sides

Leeds United are back on the road again as the Whites prepare to take on Rotherham United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Ahead of the Friday night fixture, we take a look back through the years and pick out a starting XI from the players who have worn the shirts of both clubs.

GK: Jamal Blackman
The shot-stopper joined Leeds during the summer transfer window ahead of the 2018/19 campaign on loan from Chelsea. He played two games in the League Cup for the Whites and sadly sustained an injury in an U23s game against Birmingham City in the November. Due to the severity of the injury, Blackman returned to Chelsea after the news. In August 2020, Rotherham came calling for the goalkeeper’s signature. He featured in 28 games in all competitions for Paul Warne’s signed as the Millers were relegated from the Championship that season.


DEF: Lee Peltier
The current Rotherham defender signed for LUFC in the summer of 2012 from Leicester City. He featured heavily in his first season but was sent out on loan during the following campaign to Nottingham Forest. Overall, he racked up 75 appearances and netted once during his time with Leeds. The 36-year-old signed for Rotherham ahead of the 2022/23 season and instantly became an important first team player. So far, he has 43 appearances and three goals to his name for the club.


DEF: Frazer Richardson

Richardson came through Leeds United’s academy and played in the UEFA Cup Premier League, Championship and League One during his time with the Whites. He scored five goals in 173 appearances and left the club in 2009. Richardson made the move to Rotherham in 2014 and spent two seasons in South Yorkshire. Overall, he played 43 games for the Millers before departing for Doncaster in 2016.


DEF: Ronnie Robinson
From 1985 to 1987, Robinson played on 27 occasions for LUFC before departing for Doncaster Rovers. He went on to sign for Rotherham United in August 1989 and played for the Millers until December 1991 when the club were battling relegation in the Third Division. Robinson made 86 appearances and netted two goals for the club.


DEF: Leo Hjelde
In January 2023, Rotherham signed Hjelde on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 season. He helped the Millers survive relegation from the Championship and featured in 13 appearances for the club before returning to LUFC at the end of the campaign. Hjelde made his Leeds United debut back in January 2022 in and FA Cup tie against West Ham and made his Premier League debut the following week. So far, the defender has eight Leeds appearances to his name.


MID: Jody Morris

Signed from Chelsea in the summer of 2003, Morris played for LUFC during the 2003/04 campaign but made just 12 appearances for the club before departing for Rotherham. The midfielder had a short spell with the Millers, making just 10 appearances towards the back end of the 2004/05 season.


MID: Andy Williams
Williams moved to South Yorkshire in 1986 where he would go on to net 13 goals in 87 games for Rotherham United and made the switch to Leeds two years later. Williams became part of the LUFC side that achieved promotion to the First Division in 1990 and remained with the club until 1992. He played 61 times and scored five goals during his time with the Whites. 


MID: Rod Johnson
Born in Leeds, Johnson came through the LUFC academy and became a senior player in 1962. He played 30 games and scored six times before leaving his hometown club in 1968 for Doncaster Rovers. After spending two and a half years with Doncaster, the midfielder was snapped up by Rotherham in 1970. He went on to play 110 games and score eight goals in three years for the Millers.


ATT: Don Weston

In 1960, Rotherham signed the forward after Weston’s spells with Wrexham and Birmingham City. He would go on to find the back of the net on 23 occasions in 74 games before being signed by Don Revie for LUFC in 1962. Weston scored a hat-trick on his Leeds United home debut and was later a part of the side that won promotion to the First Division in his second season with the club. The forward netted 26 goals in 78 games before leaving for Huddersfield Town in 1965.


ATT: Imre Varadi
Howard Wilkinson signed Varardi for the third time in his managerial career back in 1990 for Leeds United. Originally bought as cover for the injured Bobby Davison and Carl Shutt, Varadi was not a first team regular at Leeds, but made several appearances as substitute during both the promotion and Championship winning seasons. Rotherham came calling in 1993, he spent two seasons with the club and scored 25 league goals during his time there.


ATT: Luciano Becchio

Leeds United icon Luciano Becchio was snapped up by LUFC in 2008 from Mérida UD and remained with the Whites for the next four and a half seasons. He achieved promotion to the Championship in his second season with the club and went on to score 86 goals in 221 games. Towards the end of his playing days, he had two spells with Rotherham United, the first coming in 2014 when he was sent out on loan by Norwich City. He scored twice in five games before joining Argentinian side Belgrano. However, he returned to Rotherham in January 2016 but didn’t find the back of the net in his two additional appearances for the Millers.
