Played For Both: Leeds United & Watford

We take a look through the players who have worn the shirt for both clubs

Leeds United return Elland Road after back-to-back away games as we prepare to take on Watford on Saturday, September 23rd.

Ahead of the clash, we have a look back through the years and pick out a selection of players who have played for both clubs.


Watford line up


GK: David Russell
The 1920s goalkeeper had little first team experience when he joined the club and fought for the starting position with Billy Down during the 1925/26 season. Russell made nine appearances for the club and after failing to solidify a place in the first team, he left the club and directly joined Watford in the summer of 1926. He also couldn’t claim a regular first team place with the Hornets and played just seven times before being released in 1927.


DEF: Clarke Carlisle
Carlisle signed for Leeds ahead of the 2004/05 campaign and featured heavily for the first team throughout the season. He spent just the one season with the club and played 38 times during the campaign, netting four goals in the process. Watford came calling for his signature in the summer of 2005 and achieved promotion to the Premier League in his first season with the Hornets. Due to injury, he missed the first eight months of the 2006/07 and his time with the club finished at the end of the season. He left having made 40 appearances and scored five goals for the Hornets.


DEF: Richard Jobson

Jobson

Back in the 80s, Jobson found himself playing for Graham Taylor’s Watford side in the heart of defence when the Hornets played in the top division for the first time. He spent three seasons in Hertfordshire and signed for Leeds United a decade later in 1995. However, his time at Leeds was disrupted by injury as he made 26 appearances and scored one goal for the Whites.


DEF: Paul Robinson
The Watford-born defender began his career with the Hornets and he made his professional debut aged 17 in 1996. He went on to make 252 appearances for his boyhood club from the third tier of English football to the Premier League. After spells with West Bromwich Albion and Bolton Wanderers, Robinson was sent on loan to Leeds in March 2012. He played 10 games for the Whites before returning to Bolton at the end go the season.


DEF: Leigh Bromby
After spending the majority of his career with both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, Bromby moved down south the sign for Watford in 2008. He played 44 times for the club before making the move back up north, this time his destination was Leeds United. The defender became a part of the 2009/10 side that won promotion back to the Championship. He stayed with the club for another two seasons after the club’s promotion and announced his retirement after 66 games and one goal for the Whites.


MID: Tony Currie

Currie

Currie made his professional footballing debut for Watford back in 1967 and played 18 times for the Hertfordshire side, scoring nine goals in the process. He departed after being involved with the first team for one season for Sheffield United and after making over 300 appearances for the Blades, Leeds United secured his signature in 1976. Currie spent three seasons heavily involved with his third Yorkshire-based side and scored 16 goals in 124 games before leaving for QPR in in 1979.


MID: Jake Livermore
The current Watford player was sent out on loan to seven clubs during his time with Tottenham Hotspur, one of which was to Leeds back in 2011. He featured in five Championship games for the Whites during the 2010/11 season. The midfielder signed for the Hornets in the summer and has so far featured in three of Watford’s Championship games the first round of the Carabao Cup.


MID: Matthew Spring
Spring made over 289 appearances for Watford’s rivals Luton Town before he directly joined Leeds United ahead of the 2004/05 season. Spring spent just the one season at the club and played 15 games before joining Watford in the summer of 2005. He gained promotion to the Premier League in his first season and after two campaigns with the club, he featured 53 times and scored nine goals.


MID: Steve Hodge

Hodge

Hodge was part of the 91/92 Leeds United First Division title winning team, although he didn't claim a regular starting place, he still made important contributions during the campaign. He played 23 times and scored seven goals for Howard Wilkinson's team on their route to the title. In total, he made 54 appearances for the Whites between 1991 and 1994 and netted 10 times. Ahead of the 1995/96 season, Hodge signed for Watford but only played twice during the whole campaign, he later retired from football in 1998.


ATT: Danny Webber
The former Manchester United man had two loan spells with Watford before signing a permanent deal with the Hornets in the summer of 2003. Overall, the forward played 80 games and scored 21 goals for the club. After spells with Sheffield United and Portsmouth, Webber signed for Leeds in February 2012 until the end of the season. He scored one goal in 13 appearances for Neil Warnock’s side and left the club at the end of his contract.


ATT: Danny Graham

Graham signed for Leeds United on loan from Middlesbrough during the 2005/06 season but only featured in three Championship games for the Whites before returning to his parent club. The striker made a name for himself at Carlisle United and soon caught the attention of Watford and made the move to Hertfordshire in the summer of 2009. He spent two seasons with the club and scored 41 goals in 98 games which earned him a move to Premier League side Swansea City.
