Celebrating International Women's Day at Elland Road

Celebrating International Women\'s Day at Elland Road

Club show support for annual campaign.

Leeds United are once again showing their support for International Women's Day, with our recent midweek fixture dedicated to Her Game Too, which continues to promote inclusion and eradicate sexism in football.

The club chose to celebrate their second anniversary since partnering with Her Game Too ahead of International Women’s Day, inviting 11 young inspiring female footballers to act as the club’s mascots for the Sky Bet Championship fixture against Stoke City.

The youngsters from Howden Clough Junior Football Club were joined by their coach, Levi Macleod, who is also the Leeds United representative for Her Game Too.

Speaking to LUTV during the match, Levi said: “We’ve got the girls from Howden Clough Junior Football Club being mascots today and this is to show everybody that football is for everyone, and we’ve chosen this as our dedicated fixture to coincide with International Women’s Day.

“Hopefully the girls today can help to inspire others whilst we promote inclusivity for everyone. Hopefully we can show people young girls that football is for everyone and that it’s not just a male dominated sport.

“The girls are loving it; we’ve had tears whilst they met the first-team players, and they can’t stand still. It’s something they will remember forever.”

To help promote the great work being done by Her Game Too, and ensure as many females as possible feel welcome and comfortable whilst visiting the stadium, there was also plenty of branding and information in the matchday programme, on the big screen at Elland Road and on the club website, whilst the young mascots also wore branded t-shirts as they lead the team out of the tunnel ahead of kick-off.

International Women’s Day is about celebrating women’s achievements, raising awareness around discrimination, promoting opportunities for females and taking action to ensure we have a world that is diverse, inclusive and equal.
