Leeds United return to league action after the international break as we prepare to take on Millwall on Sunday, September 17th at The Den.

Ahead of Sunday, we have a look back through the years and pick out a selection of players who have played for both clubs.

GK: Tony Warner

In between the sticks is Tony Warner, when the former Liverpool shot-stopper departed the Reds, he joined Millwall in 1999. He would stay in London for five years where he would rack up 227 appearances for the Lions before leaving for Cardiff City in 2004. Warner made the move to Leeds United on loan from Fulham in 2006 and play 14 times for the Whites in all competitions during his brief spell with the club.

DEF: Federico Bessone
The Argentinian full-back signed for Leeds from Swansea City in June 2010 and featured on eight occasions for the club before moving on loan in January and eventually leaving the club and the end of the season. After brief spells with Swindon Town, Oldham Athletic and Sporting Kansas City, he signed a short-term contract with Millwall in February 2014 and played two games for the club.

DEF: Charlie Cresswell
The current LUFC defender spent last season on loan with Millwall where he made a big impact and played 30 times in all competitions. The youngster scored five goals during his spell, including a brace on his debut against Stoke City. So far, Cresswell has 12 first team appearances for Leeds United. 

DEF: Richard Naylor

The Leeds-born centre back was sent out on loan to Millwall in 2002 from Ipswich Town where he played just three times for the Lions. After spending the vast majority of his career with Ipswich, he signed a permanent deal with Leeds United in January 2009 and was part of the squad that achieved promotion back to the Championship in 2010. He left the club in 2011 with 76 games and four goals to his name.

DEF: Shane Lowry
Lowry signed on loan for Leeds United from Aston Villa in January 2010 and played 12 times on our way to promotion back to the Championship that season. Two seasons later, he made the move to Millwall on loan where he would feature nine times before signing a permanent deal and stay with the club until 2014. Overall, he made 91 appearances for Millwall and scored twice.

MID: Jermaine Wright
Midfielder Jermaine Wright began his footballing career with Millwall but didn’t make a first team appearance before his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1994. When he made the move to Leeds ahead of the 2004/05 campaign, he played 37 games but fell out of favour in ahead of the new season and rejoined his boyhood club on loan in in the summer of 2005. He played 16 times for the Lions a total of 40 times for the Whites.

MID: Jamie Shackleton

Like Cresswell, Shackleton also spent last season on loan with Millwall and featured in the majority of their fixtures. He played 37 times for the club before returning to Leeds United where is he still racking up appearances for the Whites. So far, Shackleton has a played 85 games for the club and has netted two goals.

MID: Peter Sweeney
The Scotsman started his career with Millwall where he played a significant role on their way to the 2004 FA Cup Final. He played 67 times for the Lions and scored five goals before departing for Stoke City in 2005. After two and a half seasons with the Potters, Sweeney made the move to Yorkshire where he would have a short-lived career with Leeds. He joined the Whites in January 2008 where he would only feature in nine games before joining Grimsby Town on loan and eventually make his deal permanent with the Mariners.

ATT: Noel Whelan

Leeds-born Whelan came through the ranks at Leeds United as a youngster in the 90s and played 58 games, netting eight times. The forward left his boyhood club for Coventry City in 1995 and eight years later, Millwall secured his signature in 2003. He scored four goals in 15 games for the Lions before leaving later in his first and only season with the club.

ATT: Steve Morison

The former Wales international had two spells with Millwall, the first coming in 2009 when he moved from Stevenage to the Lions. He gained promotion to the Championship in 2010 and scored 23 goals in his first season with the club. Morison continued his form into the following year when he netted 17 goals in all competitions. After a spell with Premier League side Norwich from 2011 to 2013, he signed for Leeds United. In his first season in Yorkshire, he scored three goals in 16 games and rejoined Millwall on loan ahead of the 2013/14 campaign. He returned to Leeds the following season and scored twice in 26 appearances. He rejoined the Lions permanently and would spend the next four seasons of his career in London. Overall, he played 343 times for Millwall and scored 92 goals.

ATT: Matt Smith

The 6’4” foot striker made the move to Yorkshire in the summer of 2013 from Oldham Athletic and had an impressive season with the club. In all competitions, Smith scored 13 goals in 43 appearances but would leave the following season for Fulham. Millwall came calling for Smith in 2019 and Smith spent the next two and a half seasons with the Lions where scored 21 goals in 102 games for the club.
