U21s Preview: Leeds United vs OGC Nice

Whites begin Premier League International Cup journey.

Leeds United Under-21s begin their Premier League International Cup journey on Thursday night, taking on French Ligue 1 Development side, OGC Nice.

Under the lights of Elland Road, the fixture will get underway at 7pm and supporters are still able to purchase tickets. Fans wishing to attend can see further information, below.

The current holders of the competition are PSV Eindhoven, having won the competition by beating Crystal Palace in the final at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The competition was introduced at the beginning of the 2014/15 season and features 12 of the Premier League 2 sides in England, who come up against 12 of the best Academy sides from across Europe, split into three groups.

Leeds United have been drawn in Group A of the competition, alongside PSV, Hertha BSC, Nice, Sparta Praha, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers.

The Premier League 2 teams do not face one another in the group stage and likewise, the European teams do not play each other either.

From the three groups, the top two advance directly to the knock-out stages, with the two best third place sides also advancing to the next round, which is the Quarter-Finals.

In the knock-out stage, all of the matches will be played in England in a one-off game with extra-time and penalties used if required, should the match be level after 90 minutes.

Michael Skubala’s thoughts, ahead of the match:

"We're really looking forward to the game against Nice. It is always good to have international opposition, they are usually really strong. It's an exciting game for the fans to come and see at Elland Road and we appreciate all the support. We'll give it everything we can to get the result we want."
