U23s Preview: Chelsea vs Leeds United

Premier League 2 action.

Andy Taylor’s Leeds United Under-23s are taking on Chelsea Under-23s at Stamford Bridge (1pm), in what is an important encounter for league position in this Premier League 2 Division One clash.

The Whites currently sit five points above Sunday’s opponents, but the hosts have two games in hand, meaning the traditional cliche of ‘six pointer’ can certainly be used when describing this one.

Last time out, Taylor’s side put in an excellent display under the lights of Elland Road to comfortably dispatch rivals Manchester United, with three goals securing three impressive points. That win made it three victories in their last five league outings.

Chelsea come into the game having drawn their last at home to London rivals, West Ham United. Prior to that, the Blues had began 2022 in style with a 5-0 thumping of Leicester, but that win was followed up with three successive defeats before taking a point against the Hammers.

The two teams are battling it out to avoid relegation from Premier League 2 Division One this season in a race that could see multiple teams involved in the fight to beat the drop. Due to the number of games in hand that Chelsea have and if they were to win them, 9th placed Brighton and 10th placed Everton will still be looking over their shoulders.

A win would see Leeds move up a place to 10th in the table, overtaking Everton. Chelsea have the possibility of going above Blackburn into 12th spot and subsequently moving out of the relegation zone, with three points.

Sam Greenwood - who performed so well in the first team win at Wolves on Friday night - is the leading scorer for the Whites, on eight. For the Blues, England Under-19 international Harvey Vale is leading the way on five.

Chelsea Football Club released an update regarding tickets for the fixture on Sunday, stating that anyone who had purchased a ticket can attend the game, but anyone who hasn’t already purchased should not try to attend the match.
