FAYC Preview: Coventry City vs Leeds United

Young Whites in FA Youth Cup action.

Scott Gardner’s Under 18s side will take on Coventry City at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night (7pm), in their first FA Youth Cup match of the season.

With the competition now at the Third Round, both teams have entered at this stage and will battle it out to progress into the Fourth Round. A possible tie with either Cambridge United or Oxford United away from home awaits the winner from Tuesday’s encounter.

Leeds go into the game on the back of some good recent form in Premier League North. The Whites are three unbeaten after impressive draws away at the top two teams, Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City, along with a thumping (5-1) home win over Newcastle United.

Coventry have also been in fine form themselves of late. Three wins on the bounce has seen John Dempster’s side score 12 goals in the process, including six last time out against Hull City.

The Sky Blues have lost just once in their 10 league matches, occupying second spot in the U18 Professional Development League.

Last season, the Whites put eight goals past MK Dons in Round Three, before then going out of the competition in the next round away at Newcastle United.

Leeds have previously won the competition twice. A comprehensive 4-1 victory over rivals Manchester United in the final of the 1992/93 season lifted the cup, then four years later a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in the final brought to West Yorkshire for a second time.

Coventry have won the competition once, which came in 1987, beating Charlton Athletic 2-1 in the final. The Sky Blues have however been to the final five times overall, losing the other four, in 1968, 1970, 1999 and 2000.
