Exclusive Nigel Martyn interview part 2

We catch up with our former goalkeeper.

Following on from talking about the expectancy when playing for Leeds United, Nigel Martyn also spoke about the club’s European adventures.

The former England international played a key role in helping the Whites reach both the 2000 UEFA Cup semi-final and the 2001 UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Along with some memorable nights in Europe, Martyn also spoke of his pride at being named the club’s greatest ever goalkeeper and the experience of returning as an opposing player…

What was it like playing in those European nights both home and away?

“They were great nights to be part of.  The atmosphere inside Elland Road was probably the loudest I can remember playing in front of anywhere and at any time when Bowyer scored his goal against AC Milan.  The roof nearly came off it was that loud!  The fans got us to the end of that AC Milan game, it was 1-0, it was very, very close against a top European side and I think the supporters got us home that night.”

Is there a specific moment that really stands out from your Leeds career?

“The AC Milan game really sticks out, as it was a really great moment, along with lots of those European trips.  But also coming back as an Everton player and playing at Elland Road against Leeds United was quite surreal, having been here so long, loving the club and being part of it, to then coming here and playing for another team.  The reception I got from all four corners of the ground that night is something I’ll never forget and I will always treasure that.  The game finished in a draw, so it was all good and I’m very thankful for that reception.”

Finally, you have been voted as Leeds United’s greatest ever goalkeeper in the 100 years of Leeds United, what’s like for you?

“It’s pretty weird to be honest!  I’m obviously very proud of that and I voted a lot of times for myself haha!   It’s a great honour for people to say that, though.  Looking back on my career now it was probably my peak years I had here and it was a privilege to play at such a great club.”
