Former Leeds United defender Barry Douglas announces retirement

Barry Douglas July 20 Championship Trophy

Former Leeds United defender Barry Douglas has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.

The Scotland international, who made a key contribution during his time at Elland Road, confirmed the news in an emotional statement shared on Instagram, bringing the curtain down on a career spanning almost 500 appearances across multiple countries.

Douglas joined the Whites in 2018 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, having just helped Wolves secure the Sky Bet Championship title. He would go on to play an important role under head coach Marcelo Bielsa during a transformative period for the club.

His Leeds debut came in Bielsa’s first game in charge, as Stoke City were beaten 3-1 at Elland Road. Douglas made an immediate impact, providing an assist for Liam Cooper in an eye-catching performance that set the tone for the campaign.

During the 2018/19 season, the left-back made 27 Championship appearances, helping Leeds reach the Play-Offs for the first time since 2005. He quickly endeared himself to supporters, most notably in the dramatic final game of that campaign against Millwall.

With Leeds having already used all three substitutions, Douglas played on despite suffering a season-ending knee ligament injury, helping the side come from behind to secure a memorable 3-2 victory.

The following season, Douglas featured 15 times in the Championship as Bielsa’s side secured promotion back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence. He played his part in crucial victories over Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City following the lockdown period.

After departing Elland Road, Douglas spent time on loan at Blackburn before rejoining Lech Poznań, where he lifted his second Polish league title, having previously won the competition with the club in the 2014/15 season. He later concluded his playing career with St Johnstone.

Announcing his retirement, Douglas said:

"Where do I even begin... the day every footballer knows is coming. It’s time to say goodbye to the playing side of the beautiful game. "In my wildest dreams, I never thought I’d make it as a professional footballer - never mind win multiple titles in different countries and go on to play almost 500 games. Now that I’m finally “hanging up the boots,” I can look back with immense pride, knowing I gave it everything I had. "A massive thank you to all the clubs who trusted me to wear their badge. It’s been an honour and a privilege to fight for the shirt, and I never once took that responsibility for granted. "Every kid grows up dreaming of playing for their country - so to have made that a reality is something I’ll always be incredibly proud of. "Along the way, I’ve met so many amazing people - teammates, physios, chefs, groundsmen, kit men, cleaners… the list is endless. To everyone whose path I crossed, thank you. I truly appreciate you all, and I always tried to be the best version of myself, both on and off the pitch. Football… it’s been a pleasure."
