Former Leeds United defender Barry Douglas has announced his retirement from professional football, prompting an outpouring of tributes from former teammates, colleagues and supporters.

The left-back, a key figure in Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion-winning squad, departs the game with a reputation not only for his quality on the pitch, but for his character off it - something reflected in the messages shared by those who played alongside him.

Dressing room bonds remembered

Midfielder Mateusz Klich was among the first to respond, highlighting both Douglas’ personality and his connection with teammates.

“Barry D! It was pleasure brother! Enjoyed every second with you! Respect for speaking fluent Polish too”

“Some career basher. Pleasure to share a dressing room with you and make memories that will last a lifetime. Love ya fella”

A respected figure across the squad

Douglas’ influence extended across generations at Thorp Arch, with younger players also paying tribute.

Sam Greenwood said:

“All the best in your next chapter mate”

While Leif Davis credited the defender’s guidance:

“Basher was a pleasure to share the dressing room with you. Appreciate the things you taught me on the pitch”

Douglas was part of the squad that delivered promotion back to the Premier League, ending a 16-year absence and cementing his place in club history.

Fans and familiar faces join the chorus

Supporters and well-known Leeds fans also shared their appreciation for Douglas’ career.

Darts' world number 2 Luke Humphries wrote:

“What a Legend!! Some career you’ve had mate. Should be incredibly proud of what you achieved. Enjoy the time with the family now and time for some golf.”
