REDFEARN HAILS YOUNG STARS

Neil Redfearn reflects on the Development Squad meeting with Sheffield United…

Senior Professional Development Coach Neil Redfearn felt that the Development Squad deserved victory from Monday's game against Sheffield United.

The visitors gained a 1-1 draw on an evening where a young United side dominated proceedings and had the far superior chances during the game.

It was a freak own goal that gifted the Blades an equaliser but it was the performance of his young side that pleased Redfearn the most.

“It was a great performance,” he said. “I thought for long spells we were by far the better team and created the better chances.

“We played the better football. They had an experienced side out in the regard that they had three pros in their side.

“We didn’t have any senior pros in. We had some young pros in there but we were predominantly scholars. As a work out it was great for us.

“We deserved to win, there were no two ways about it, but a draw against a team like that is not a bad result.

“It was a great performance with the young boys coming into this stage and playing at Elland Road in front of a little bit of a crowd. It’s good. This is what it is all about, this is how they develop.”

Young United striker Lewis Walters was once again on the scoresheet after showing great pace to latch onto a Chris Dawson through ball and the boss was pleased with his ‘clinical’ finish.

“We changed our shape at the start and we changed it halfway through the first half to a diamond formation which suits them better," added Redfearn.

“We had Chris Dawson behind the front two and he started getting on the ball and come into the game.

“He set up our goal with a great pass and to be fair to Lewis Walters once he gets a clean pair of heels he is clinical and he stuck his chance in really well.”
