UNDER-21S HELD AT THORP ARCH

Youngsters in 1-1 draw with Coventry...

Our Under-21s were held to a 1-1 draw with Coventry City at Thorp Arch on Monday afternoon.

The visitors had the first sight of goal, with Daniel Atkinson denying Blair Turgott with a fine save after just four minutes, before Luke Parkin and Frank Mulhern both fired over at the opposite end for United.

Lewis Walters then terrorised the Coventry defence down their left, twisting and turning before shooting into the arms of goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook, while Jack Vann and Eoghan Stokes came close as the Leeds youngsters ended a goalless first half brightly.

And Jason Blunt’s side managed to take the lead within 10 minutes of the restart courtesy of Walters. Some persistent play from the 20-year-old forward opened things up inside the area and he was able to poke beyond Charles-Cook to open the scoring.

The goal appeared to liven things up at United’s Academy base and Jake Skelton was twice called into action to hack goal-bound chances off the line and preserve the lead, while Mulhern’s shot was kept out by the sprawling Charles-Cook as it looked to be creeping in.

Having used all three of their substitutions, Leeds were reduced to 10 men for the final 15 minutes as Eoghan Stokes pulled up with injury.

And Coventry were able to capitalise with just four minutes remaining on the clock as the lively Turgott found space on the edge of the box before firing beyond Atkinson into the bottom corner. Turgott then rattled the bar moments later, but it proved to be the final piece of goalmouth action as the spoils were shared.

Neil Redfearn, who was in attendance at Thorp Arch, said: "It was a good game. I thought we deserved to win if I’m honest.

"We ended up with 10 men through the substitutions being used and Eoghan Stokes going down with a hamstring.

"The lads had to play the last 10 or 15 minutes with 10 men and obviously they came back and nicked a goal.

"I thought it was quite an evenly-fought contest but I thought we were the better side.

"There were some really pleasing performances. I thougth Tom Lyman stood out in midfield and Jack Vann as well in midfield.

"I thought the two centre backs looked really solid – Ross Killock and Jake Skelton. It was a pleasing game."

United team: Atkinson, Coyle (c), Skelton, Killock, Denton (Pearce 66), Vann (Booker 50), Lyman, Walters (McDaid 74), Parkin, Stokes, Mulhern. Subs. Grimes, Taylor.
