South Yorkshire Police aim to deliver a safe environment for all as Sheffield Wednesday meet fellow Yorkshire side Leeds United in the Owls’ final home game of the 2014/2015 season.

The teams meet at Hillsborough at 12.30pm on Saturday April 25, and with about 28,000 people expected to attend the match, significant extra police resources will be on duty to ensure a safe, enjoyable local derby.

Football supporters are reminded that Supertram services to Leppings Lane are interrupted due to essential engineering work, and that some extra bus services will be provided for fans travelling to the game from Sheffield railway station and the city centre. However, there will not be a like-for-like tram replacement service and fans may wish to consider this when planning their journeys.

Superintendent Scott Green, who is the Police Commander for this fixture, said: “We are planning for a safe, enjoyable event for everyone attending.

“It’s the last home match of the season for Sheffield Wednesday and a local derby and I want to make it clear that no level of disorder will be tolerated. We will have sufficient resources in place to deal with those intent on causing trouble.

“Once the final whistle has been blown, Sheffield Wednesday players will want to come back out on the pitch to mark their last home game of the season. We encourage fans to respect this, and remember that it is a criminal offence to enter the playing area. We are working with Sheffield Wednesday to prevent this from happening.”

The Superintendent issued advice to be aware of the possibility of increased traffic around the area. “With tram services to and from the Hillsborough ground not running, there is likely to be a large volume of traffic on the roads around the ground. Some extra bus services are being provided, but please ensure you plan your journey and leave plenty of time to avoid delays.”

A Sheffield Wednesday spokesman said: “The club would like to welcome supporters of both clubs to Hillsborough for the Owls’ last home fixture of the season in what is set to be an exciting Yorkshire derby. We are working alongside South Yorkshire Police to ensure this is an enjoyable, safe fixture and encourage supporters to plan their journeys to the ground and to leave plenty of time.”
