Leeds United Women progressed to the third round proper of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup this afternoon, following a 3-1 win away at local rivals Huddersfield Town Women.
Goals from Sian Gibrill-Keating, Izzy Elliott and Drew Greene condemned the Terriers to defeat, securing the bragging rights in the West Yorkshire derby.
Speaking after the match, Whites boss Simon Wood said: “It feels big to be honest, it’s the FA Cup. Before the game we knew it was going to be a proper cup tie, it’s a Yorkshire Derby, it’s against a team we’ve already had a competitive fixture against, so we wanted a really big performance today from the team.
“I think you saw from our players from the first minute until the last was just how hard they were willing to work and how hard they were willing to run, I think that set the tone for the game.”
On bouncing back following the narrow defeat against West Bromwich Albion Women: “It was really important. The performance against West Brom was a really good one so we didn’t leave sulking. We looked at the positives from it and we knew today would be a similar game against a very good side.
“I think today we were probably a little bit calmer on the ball. We had a little bit more maturity in some of the decisions we were making when we got possession back, so yeah, it was really important to bounce back.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Simon added on the visit of Stockport County Women next week. “The players now need to focus. We will look at Stockport’s strengths, we will look at where our strengths can counter, maybe some of the challenges that they have in a game of football.
“Hopefully today’s victory will inspire us again to go, but like I said, it’s about the performance, so we’ll go in next Sunday and be ready for it.”
