Leeds United Women ran out 3-0 winners Sunday afternoon at Bannister Prentice Stadium, dispatching a strong Stockport County side to move up to third place in the FA Women’s National League Division One North.
After the game, Whites manager Simon Wood spoke to LUTV about his takeaways from the match.
“This was a good three points against a very good Stockport side,” Wood said. “They rotate well, and we needed our players to be prepared for that.
“I think what separated the two teams in the first half were two high class deliveries into the box and two fantastic finishes. We found moments to go ahead in this game.”
It was Alice Hughes and Drew Greene who fired the Whites into the lead in the first half, the former scoring off a corner kick just two minutes into the game.
In the second half, Wood said, Leeds needed to dig in against a Stockport side who pressed high looking to close the deficit. United defended well and took their chance when it fell to them with Ellie White slotting home from a Darcie Greene cross.
“This was a good win and probably a very important three points when you look at it.
“We know we have got a team where everyone works hard, and we are not relying on just one person to score goals. Everyone is chipping in.
“We spoke about it in the huddle, how it is not just the 11 players on the pitch, it is the whole squad and the academy team below us.”
Looking ahead to the Whites’ next match, Sunday away to Norton & Stockton Ancients, Wood wants his team to find a way to win against an opponent they have already played twice this season in cups, drawing once and winning once on penalties.
“We know what their strengths are. We will have a game plan. The way we are playing right now the team wants to go right back out on the pitch and play right away.”
